Questions I’m often asked about stuttering therapy

How long is your waiting list?

I no longer keep a waiting list. I have a small practice, and waiting list management takes time away from clinical work. When I had a waiting list and spent time recontacting people to offer an appointment I mostly didn’t end up working with them (the time that was available didn’t suit them or they had found another service). If my caseload is full, keep checking the ‘contact’ page because I will update here as appointments become available.

Why treat stuttering?

Going through life with stuttering increases the risk of developing social anxiety and other psychological conditions. Stuttering is associated with poorer quality of life, as well as reduced educational and work attainment.

How long does treatment take?

We can discuss this at assessment, when I know the nature of the stuttering. Regardless of the age of the person who stutters or their treatment goals, consistent home practice will be essential. In most of the programs I offer treatment appointments are weekly initially.

How does treatment over telehealth work?

It’s almost the same as in person treatment. Although we aren’t in the same room we do the same things (talk, mostly) over the webcam. When I’m working with children I’ll observe you and your child talking and playing. As your child becomes more familiar with me, we’ll talk too. This is similar to how I work in person. Paediatric treatments mostly involve parent training. Being in your own environment allows you to set up your child with a quiet activity while we do this.

What technology do I need for telehealth?

You’ll need a computer with a camera and video-quality internet. Alternatively you could use a smart phone and be in a quiet location with good reception.

Do you offer RESTART-DCM treatment?

No. I have considered offering this. I attended 10 hours of training and subsequently had a lengthy discussion about the treatment with one of the developers. Currently the evidence for treating with the Lidcombe Program is stronger.

How long is an appointment?

Assessment and treatment appointments are 50 minutes. Shorter (30 minute) appointments are offered in stage 2 of the Lidcombe Program.

What are your fees?

I will email you appointment costs and the cancellation policy when you make an enquiry.

How do I pay?

After the appointment I will email you an invoice. Payment is made via direct bank transfer or credit card (Stripe).

Can I get a rebate through Medicare?

Your GP can advise on this. Usually clients with more than one chronic condition qualify for a partial rebate on a limited number of appointments. If you are eligible your GP would document a plan and ask me to participate. Extra reporting is required but currently I don’t charge an additional fee for this.

Can I get a rebate through my private health fund?

If you have private health cover that includes speech pathology you will be able to seek a rebate on my services. Contact your fund to confirm your cover details.

How do you keep my personal information private and secure?

My processes are HIPAA compliant. Records are kept in the cloud (rather than on paper or in a computer) using software built for health professionals. Please note that I will not share any of your personal details with anyone, except with your permission.
